Is Guatemala Safe for Americans?

I've lived in Guatemala City for more than five years and never once felt unsafe. Here's where to live, where not to go, and what the warnings get wrong.

Yes, if you’re smart about where you are. I’ve lived in Zone 14 of Guatemala City for more than five years. Not once have I felt unsafe in this country, in any zone, including the “dangerous” ones.

That doesn’t mean the whole country is the same. It isn’t. The danger in Guatemala is real, but it’s concentrated, and it’s not where you’d be living.

What people back home get wrong

People back home picture a jungle where everyone’s killing each other. That’s not what this is.

In my neighborhood, the most dangerous things are the joggers in the morning taking up both sides of the road, and the traffic in the afternoon when parents pick their kids up from the expensive private schools. That’s the daily threat level in the zones where most Americans live.

Watch me walk into one of the most notorious areas in the country in a bulletproof vest, and see what I actually found:

What the official numbers say

You should know what the warnings say, so here they are, straight.

  • The US State Department rates Guatemala Level 3, “Reconsider travel,” as of March 12, 2026. It lists four places as Level 4, “Do not travel”: San Marcos department, Huehuetenango department, Zone 18 in Guatemala City, and the city of Villa Nueva.
  • The homicide rate was about 17.3 per 100,000 people in 2025, according to figures from Guatemala’s CIEN research center reported by Prensa Libre.
  • Gang violence is real. In January 2026, gangs took over three prisons and attacked police, and the US Embassy issued a security alert for parts of Guatemala City.

Here’s the part the headlines skip. Guatemala’s homicide rate in 2025 was about 17.3 per 100,000. In the US the same year, St. Louis was at about 50, Memphis 38, New Orleans 33. Nobody tells Americans to stay out of America because of St. Louis. They tell you to know which neighborhoods to avoid. Same here.

The violence in Guatemala is mostly gang against gang, and gang against police, in specific areas like Zone 18 and Villa Nueva. Not where the gringos go.

The government wants to keep the sheep in the barn. My readers aren’t sheep.

Where to live when you first arrive

This is exactly what I tell every new guy.

Start in Zones 10, 14, 15 or 16. These are the established, comfortable parts of Guatemala City. Stay there until you get the lay of the land.

Then Zones 4, 9 and 13 are fine too. Zone 4 has a downtown kind of vibe, and I like it more every time I go. Zones 9 and 13 are central and convenient.

Learn the rest by living here. After a few months you’ll have heard which zones to avoid, and why. Then you can make your own educated decisions about where you go. Don’t let someone online give you a map of fear before you’ve even landed.

What I actually do differently

Nothing. I keep a basic level of situational awareness, the same as I would anywhere in the world.

If you want one piece of practical advice: don’t walk on the street edge of the sidewalk with your phone out. That’s the easy grab. Just pay attention, and you’ll be fine.

Is it safe for a man on his own? With a family?

It’s safe solo, and it’s safe with your family. The rules are the same either way: be in the right zones, and pay attention.

The bottom line

Guatemala is not the war zone you’ve been told it is. It’s also not Disneyland. Live in the right zones, use the same common sense you’d use in any big city, and you’ll wonder what everyone back home was so worried about.
